What placeholder text is actually for

Lorem ipsum survives because it solves a specific problem: it looks like text without being readable. Type specimens and layout mockups need something with the visual texture of language — word lengths, sentence rhythm, the grey tone a block of type makes on a page — that does not pull the eye into reading it. English filler fails at this because people read it; repeated "content here content here" fails because its texture is wrong and the repetition shows. Scrambled Latin sits in the gap. That same property is its weakness during content review, which is why the alternatives here exist: when the question is "does this heading work", unreadable filler gives you no answer at all.

Designing with filler, and its limits

Filler text sets a trap that catches most layouts eventually: it is always well-behaved. It has no very long words, no all-caps acronyms, no URLs, no names in scripts that need different fonts, and it is always available in exactly the quantity the design assumed. Real content has all of those, and the components that break in production — a card whose title was designed for three words and receives eleven, a table cell that cannot wrap a long identifier — usually looked fine with lorem. The practical habit is to generate filler at several lengths rather than one, test the extremes rather than the comfortable middle, and swap in real content as early as it exists.
